They breed from southern Canada south to central California, New Mexico, northern Arkansas, and northern Georgia. Also from Mexico southward throughout South America and the West Indies. They spend the winter in the southern U.S. and Mexico.
They live in brush and shrubberies, in woodlands, parks and yards.
They are a small, brown bird that is darker on top and lighter below. They stand with their tail up (cocked). They have a long, thin bill. Males and females look alike.
They are very territorial.
They eat insects.
They build a stick nest in a tree hole or nest box and line it with grass, bark and feathers. The female will lay 3 – 10 white eggs with small brown spots.
