They are found on the southern island of New Zealand.
They live up high in the mountains in rocky areas.
They are big parrots, reaching 20 inches long. They have big, strong beaks that they use to explore things that they find.
They are very smart and curious birds and will “look over” things they find. They can be destructive at campsites while exploring for food. They travel in groups and though many will watch, it is usually just a couple of brave birds that will wreck a campground. Their main predator was man, who hunted them to keep them from doing damage to farms. They are now protected from hunting.
They eat mostly plant shoots, roots and berries, but will eat insects and grubs (insect larvae) too.
They build nests among the big rocks high up in the mountains. Females lay 2-4 eggs.
