Range

They are only found on Little Barrier Island of New Zealand.

Habitat

They live in forests.

Body Traits

Males are dark colored with yellow shoulder patches and a yellow breast, white wing bars and white feather tufts on the sides of their black heads. Females are more drab with only the white wing bars and smaller feather tufts on the side of their head. They are about 7 inches tall.

Habits

They stand with tail tipped up and call loudly.

Diet

They eat insects, fruits and flower nectar.

Reproduction

They build a nest of sticks and ferns in a tree hole. Females may mate with several males before laying eggs.
