A female goose is called a goose. A male goose is called a gander. A baby goose is called a gosling.
Tamed (domestic) geese are thought to have come from the wild graylag goose.
Tame geese are often all white, with an orange bill, legs and feet. They are bigger than their wild relatives weighing up to 20 pounds. They have long, powerful necks. They can use the force of their necks to attack an animal that threatens. For this reason, some farmers keep them as barnyard guards.
They are herbivores, eating only plant matter.
Geese supply eggs, down feathers and meat to farmers. They have a much higher fat content than other birds so also supply fat.
