They are found throughout northern North America from Alaska and the Northwest Territories south through the Northern U.S. in the east and down the mountainous regions of the west from California to New Mexico and Arizona.
They live around wetlands: bogs, fens, slow streams, cattail lakes and ponds. In their northern prairie range, they can be found around prairie potholes.
They are up to 3 inches long (7.6cm) with blue-green eyes. They have a distinct dark line across the face. Wings may have a brownish tint. The stripes on the abdomen may be narrow or broken into spots.
They are out from July to September, late in the day until dark.
They eat flying insects.
Females lay their eggs on plants stems near the water line.
