Habitat

They are found in rocky woods, on ledges and open slopes.

Description

They have nodding, scarlet-red flowers with yellow centers. They have long pollen strands (stamens) that hang out of the plant. Each petal has a long spur in the back. The leaves on the stem have 3-lobed leaflets. They have long stems with just leaflets too. They bloom April through July.

Taxonomic Features (Traits) for Identification

  • Flower Type: Flowers irregular with 5 fused petals forming a showy, nodding bell and each with a spur in back. Yellow stamens hanging out the bottom.
  • Flower Color: Bright red with a yellow center
  • Leaf Arrangement: Alternate
  • Plant Type: Wildflower (tall - 1-3 feet)
  • Leaf Type: Deeply lobed with 3 leaflets
