They are found from Alaska and Canada south into the eastern U.S. to Florida and west to the Rocky Mountains and central Texas. They are also found in Europe and Asia.
They live in forests with some open areas with brambles for nectar.
They have dark wings with a wide, white band across each wing, and a row of orange spots and bluish dashes outside of that. Their wingspan can reach more than 3.25".
They perch on trees and tall bushes.
The caterpillars eat birch, willow and poplar leaves. Adults eat honeysuckle nectar.
Females lay eggs on food leaves and hatching caterpillars eat them.
