They are found in eastern North America from Canada south to the Gulf of Mexico, west to the Colorado prairie and central Texas.
They live in forests, fields, gardens and parks.
They have yellow wings with black stripes and a thick, black border. The back wings have a tail on each side, a band of blue patches and one red spot on the inside each wing. The wingspan is up to 4.75" wide.
Many survive the winter in their chrysalis.
The caterpillars eat wild cherry leaves.
Females lay one egg on a wild cherry leaf that hatching young will eat.
