They are found in many types of forests, valleys and mountainsides often in big groups.
The bark is whitish-green and smooth. It becomes gray and ridged as the tree gets older. The leaves are 1 - 3 inches long, round and shiny green with fine teeth. The leaves have a flat stem that makes them shake (quake) in a breeze. The flowers are catkins and come out in early spring, before the leaves.
