They are found from northern Canada all across the U.S. from Alaska south to Mexico and to a limited extent in South America. They are also found in Eurasia and Morocco.
They prefer open country, but will breed on mowed areas.
They are small songbirds (up to 8" long) with a brown back, pale yellow face, throat, chest and belly, and black cap, face mask and chest band. They have small black tufts on the top of the head that resemble horns.
They have been known to nest in low grass between busy airport runways!
They eat seeds and insects.
They build a nest of grass on the ground. They lay up to 5 light gray, speckled eggs.
