Range

They breed in the summer in Alaska, all across Canada, south to the northeastern U.S. and Rockies into central Mexico and Guatemala. They spend the winter in southern Canada.

Habitat

They are found in coniferous forests, thickets and shrubby fields.

Body Traits

They have mottled brown streaks all over with yellow patches at the base of tail and on their wings. They have a thin, sharp beak and a notched tail.

Habits

They visit feeders in the winter.

Diet

They eat small seeds, tree buds, insects, and spiders.

Reproduction

They make a shallow nest of twigs, grass, leaves, bark strips, and lichens. They line it with fur, feathers, grass, and moss. The female lays 3 - 4 pale greenish blue eggs with brown speckles.
