There are many different kinds of water boatman found all over the world.
Found in ponds, lakes and attracted to algae in bird baths and fountains.
Gray-brown, long, oval body with cross-hatched pattern on wing covers. Back legs are flattened and paddle-like, fringed with hair.
They have a zig-zag swimming pattern. They are sometimes confused with backswimmers because they have the same general shape. However, backswimmers swim upside down in the water and are colored with the wings lighter than the leg area.
They feed on algae.
The eggs are laid singly attached to the stems of plants or fixed to the threads of floating algae.
