They are found at sea in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
They live on the ocean, only coming to shore to nest.
They are dark gray all over and darker on the sides of their heads. They have a black beak. There is a white line around the back of the eye and along the side of the beak. They have a diamond-shaped tail and a very wide wingspan of up to more than 2 feet.
They mate for life. They can dive more than 20 feet into the ocean after fish. They are considered endangered.
They eat fish, squid, small ocean creatures and carrion (dead birds).
They build nests in the thick grass on cliffs over the ocean on an island. They nest in small groups or alone. Females lay one egg. Both parents take turns warming the egg (incubating) and guarding the nest for more than 2 months. After it hatches, both parents help with the feeding.
